CIRPD Activities for Arthritis

Current Activities

With funding from Canadian Institutes of Health Research, CIRPD is developing a Chronic Pain Needs Assessment Survey. This survey will target people who have chronic pain conditions like arthritis to assess what their current challenges and information needs are. Our aim is to use the results to inform our Chronic Pain Self-Management Toolkit that is in its beginning stages.

Marc White PhD, is Vice-President, and Research Chair for the Canadian Pain Coalition which is creating resources for people with various chronic pain conditions.

CIRPD is a strong supporter of the Arthritis/Fibromyalgia/Chronic Pain Self-Management Programs offered by the Centre of Aging, University of Victoria throughout the province of British Columbia.

CIRPD is hosting a series of free webinars for people with chronic pain. Our “Chronic Pain, The Journey Forward” series starts in the summer of 2011 and all recordings will be available to the public after the events.

Past Educational Conference and Workshops

Living Well With Arthritis - for Older Adults

In 2006, CIRPD hosted an educational event on living well with arthritis presented by Karen Rangno, RN. Karen discussed various types of arthritis; symptoms treatments and prevention of arthritis; and appropriate exercises and movements for pain management.

Research for People Living with Arthritis

In 2006, CIRPD hosted an educational event on arthritis research presented by Dr. Andrew Chalmers.

For two of the major forms of arthritis – rheumatoid arthritis and lupus – the last five years have been years of significant advances. The fields of molecular biology and genetics and a better understanding of how to treat the diseases has led to improved outcomes. Dr. Chalmers primarily discussed new information in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and osteoporosis.

Physical Activity and Osteoarthritis

In 2006, CIRPD hosted and educational event on physical activity and osteoarthritis presented by Dr. Jacek Kopec. The relationship between physical activity and osteoarthritis is complicated. For example, we know that heavy physical work, competitive sports and knee injuries increase the risk of osteoarthritis. We also know that exercise is helpful in persons with osteoarthritis and has many other beneficial effects. Our study looks at the lifetime history of physical activity (occupational, recreational and domestic activities) in a large group of Canadians to find out which activities increase the risk of osteoarthritis and which help keep the joints healthy.

Arthritis Research, something to ROAR about!!!

In 2006, CIRPD hosted an educational event on current research on arthritis. The Consumer Advisory Board of the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada works with the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada, The Arthritis Society and the Canadian Institute for the Relief of Pain and Disability to bring arthritis research to the arthritis community at large. Presented in an interactive, exciting format ROUNDTABLE ON ARTHRITIS RESEARCH (ROAR) took place at The Arbutus Club on Saturday, September 30th from 8:30 - 3:30 pm. Please see our brochure for details on speakers & presentations.
